I call this neat little trick the 3-2-1 method. And yes, I say that in my rocket countdown voice. Thanks to kids this is now the way my mind works! 🤷‍♀️

Jokes and mum's brain aside, this strategy is the ultimate time saver. I use it all the time in not only my own business, but also for many of my clients too.

As a busy small business owner the last thing you want to be doing is wasting your time producing content. Even though we all know content is QUEEN. Yes, I know in the content guru circles they say content is king. But we all know the truth.

Who rules the world? Girls. (Thanks Beyonce)!

So, content is QUEEN and we need to make it work for our small businesses.

The 3-2-1 method is part of the 4 EASE pillar strategy.

The 3-2-1 method forms part of the super duper 4 EASE pillars strategy. The EASE pillars underpin all my successful content marketing campaigns for myself and my clients. They are part of a package I have developed to help small biz owners master content creation without wasting time or energy.

A quick recap of the 4 EASE pillars:

  • Provides a framework to lead customers through the buyer's journey.
  • Helps build content that provides value, builds trust and develops your authority.
  • Helps to develop a content plan that organically promotes your business.
  • The 4 pillars are:
    • Educate
    • Animate
    • Sell
    • Evangelist

How do small biz owners save time with the 3-2-1 method?

Since I know how valuable your time is, let’s get into what this amazing method is and how it can save you time, energy and headaches!

You need to develop content ideas for each of the 4 EASE Pillars to ensure you guide your potential customer through the buyer cycle.

“The buyer's cycle is “the journey a buyer goes through before making a decision to purchase a product or service.”

They move through the “awareness” stage (identify their problem or need), “consideration” stage (looking for solutions and answers) to the “decision” stage (decide how they want to solve their problem).

By creating content that is targeted at each of these stages you will keep your business visible, build trust and engage your audience. Someone is more likely to invest or buy from a business they recognise or know, than a complete stranger!

The EASE pillars provide a framework for hitting these stages and guiding your potential customer to buy or invest in YOU! The fourth EASE pillar, Evangelist, turns a paying customer into a loyal customer who will spread the word about your amazing business to everyone they know!

How does the 3-2-1 method help with content ideas?

Easy! As I mentioned before, you need to develop content for each pillar. The 3-2-1 method simply breaks it down into:

  • 3 pieces for Educate.
  • 3 pieces for Animate
  • 2 pieces for Sell.
  • 1 piece for Evangelist.

By following this method you now have 9 content ideas.

But wait, I can hear you say. Rachel, didn't you mention at the very beginning of this post that we could use the 3-2-1 method to create 10 pieces of content in an hour? And that is only 9. Can’t you count?!

Well, admittedly the mum brain can slow me down at times, but I can still count!

The 10th piece of content is your pillar content. (Not to be confused with the 4 EASE pillars).

Your pillar content is the piece of content you want all your other pieces to point towards. The pillar piece is what gives your audience the final push to buy or invest from you and highlights your “big action”.

Now is the time to grab out your content planner.

If you don’t have one, here is a handy one I developed for my own business.

Or go old school and grab paper and pen.

Put on some inspiring music (or silence if that floats your boat).

Write down your pillar content idea.

Then create 4 headings underneath, one for each of the 4 EASE pillars.

  • Educate
  • Animate
  • Sell
  • Evangelist

Now brainstorm ideas under each one. Keeping in mind the 3-2-1 method.

Once you have finished you will have 10 content ideas. In an hour, or less!
